Coronavirus - CS032108

A student was given a fine by their provider for breaching its code of conduct, and government restrictions on social distancing introduced during the coronavirus pandemic.

The student appealed against the fine. The student said they had not been given evidence of what they were accused of doing, and the reason for the fine was not clear. They had been told firstly that the fine was for attending an illegal gathering in their accommodation block, and later on that it was for allowing people into the building. The provider rejected the student’s appeal and the student complained to us.

During the course of our review, the provider offered to re-hear the student’s appeal because it had identified some issues with the way it had handled the disciplinary case against the student. The student accepted the provider’s offer and the complaint to us was Settled on that basis.
