THE STUDENT EXPERIENCE OF HIGHER EDUCATION PROVIDER CLOSURE

The student experience of higher education provider closure

8 September 2026

Our latest report, published on 8 September 2026 and produced with SUMS Consulting, explores what provider and course closure feels like from the perspective of students who have experienced it.

Building on our 2025 report and framework, Putting students first: Managing the impact of higher education provider closure, it brings the student voice into the conversation and examines the immediate and longer-term impacts of closure, including disruption to learning, wellbeing, finances and future aspirations.

It also highlights how these impacts are not experienced equally by all students and identifies practical steps that providers, receiving institutions, government and regulators can take to strengthen student protection and reduce harm before, during and after closure.

Charlotte Corrish, Head of Public Policy says:

"The students who contributed to this research offered valuable insight into an experience that is rarely captured in policy discussions about provider closure. Their accounts remind us that student protection is about much more than enabling academic continuation. It is also about how people are supported through uncertainty, disruption and change. We hope this report helps ensure that student voices remain central to future policy and practice."
