Service issues including consumer rights - CS092406

A postgraduate student complained to their provider that they hadn’t had been able to complete an industrial placement as part of their course because the process for applying for placements had been unclear.

Complaint - CS082005

A student complained that a member of staff had completed the National Student Survey (NSS) on her behalf during a meeting. Other students also expressed concerns and the matter was raised with the Office for Students (OfS).

Disciplinary procedures (academic) - CS041904

An international student was reported to the police for an alleged assault on another student. The provider suspended the student, but made arrangements for them to sit their final assessments.

Disciplinary matters (non-academic) - CS102307

A student was disciplined after the fire alarm in their room was disabled by their partner. The provider decided that this was a breach of the Accommodation Terms and Conditions. The student was fined £500 and their accommodation contract was terminated, with a ban on re-applying in the future. The student appealed this sanction as they considered it was too harsh. The provider rejected the appeal.

Harassment and sexual misconduct - CS042309

A former student complained to the provider about the behaviour of a member of academic staff several years earlier. The student said the staff member had coerced them into a sexual relationship, which continued after they had graduated.

Coronavirus - CS032107

An international student was self-isolating in their student accommodation, having returned from their home country. During their self-isolation a friend visited their room.

Accommodation - CS012407

A student was prevented from applying to accommodation owned and managed by the provider for a third successive year because of their past behaviour, disciplinary record and outstanding charges for a broken window.

Disciplinary procedures (non-academic) - CS082001

Several students in a Halls of Residence got into a dispute about noise. Over the course of an evening, a number of messages were exchanged via a group WhatsApp chat, which included offensive language and explicit sexual content.

Placement - CS032407

An operating department practice student had been given a second attempt at a placement because not all of their first-year practice competencies had been signed off. The student was later withdrawn from the programme because they did not pass their second attempt.

Coronavirus - CS072109

A student and some of their housemates organised a party held in the accommodation they were renting from their higher education provider. The party was attended by several students from other residences.

We publish summaries of some of the complaints that we review. We always leave out of the summary any information that might identify the student who made the complaint. In some cases we decide that it is in the public interest to publish a summary of a complaint that includes the name of the provider.
